As we enter the final countdown to the Royal wedding we thought it would be a great time to think of a few ways you can ensure that you’re treated like royalty on your own big day.

Harry and Meghan have certainly made their day their own; they’ve broken from tradition to invite 1,000 members of the public, they’re the first royal wedding not to serve a fruitcake and are also tying the knot on a Saturday rather than a week day, so what special touches can you treat yourselves to?

A venue steeped in history or a modern feel?

The choice of venue is of course one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when you’re planning your wedding. Harry and Meghan will be having their nuptials in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle which is steeped in Royal history, so if you’re looking for your own slice of history we’re lucky to have St Swithin’s Church, famously referred to as ‘the least spoilt church in Cornwall’ by Sir John Betjeman, a literal stone’s throw from our venue. You can also enjoy your wedding weekend in our Manor House, which is referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086!

Fancy adopting some of Harry and Meghan’s more modern ideas? Our brand new, purpose-built reception barn has been designed to complement the original house and is able to fit up to 180 guests on round tables or 200 on trestles. This space gives our couples complete flexibility to decorate and make the space their own. It doesn’t stop their either! Our converted 19th century Mill Barn which is built from stone offers even more chances for you to make your day your own and can seat up to 160.

Invited by your majesty

Harry and Meghan’s invitations were made by London-based fine printers ‘Barnard and Westwood’ who’ve been creating invitations for the royal family since 1985. Their invite differs to William and Kate’s as it bares the crest of Prince Charles rather than the Queen, from whom all previous invites have been sent.

Your own invites will be the first chance for you to share the style of your wedding; will you go modern or traditional? The great news is that Devon and Cornwall are both full of fantastic designers – there’s something to meet everyone’s chosen style.

Fancy florals

Back in March, Kensington Palace announced that Harry and Meghan had chosen Philippa Craddock to create the floral design for their wedding, both for the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel and the reception at Windsor Castle. Choosing flowers and designs won’t be something most of us do on a daily basis, so we’re always happy to give you ideas and suggestions and put you in touch with the best suppliers we know locally.

A classical choice of music

Whilst it’s rumored that Elton John is set to play at the Royal Wedding, one musician not gaining as many headlines is 19-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason who will also be amongst the day’s performers. Classical music can give your ceremony a real air of elegance and with a great selection of classical musicians and string quartets blessing the West Country it could be an option to explore if you’ve not considered it before.

A show stopping cake

Traditionally royal wedding cakes make a real statement, boasting multiple tiers adorned with intricate sugar work. Whilst we’re not advising you copy Prince Charles and Camilla in terms of size (theirs weighed an impressive 17 stone and took around 130 hours to decorate), you’ll definitely want it to be every bit as tasty, so if you’re wanting some recommendations on who to go with we’ve been lucky enough to sample some fantastic cakes from local suppliers and always happy to let you have our recommendations.

Our beautiful buildings

As a venue we’re very flexible as we have a number of buildings, each with their own qualities; no two wedding days are ever the same here!

Charm and history in our Manor House

The Manor House is made up of two halves; the older half dates back to the 14th century and retains a number of charming, historical features throughout, whilst the newer half is classically Georgian. The Bridal Suite is nestled on the far side of the house, an elegant space perfect for preparing for your wedding day and then spending your first night together as a married couple! You may also have your nearest and dearest stay with you in the house thanks to its further five bedrooms and large communal kitchen.

Original stonework features and exposed beams in Mill Barn

The Mill Barn is a converted 19th century stone building and retains a number of original stone work features. Along with exposed beams and large French doors, it is a popular ceremony spot for our couples. It’s the perfect blank canvas for you to decorate as you wish and bring your ideas to life.

A purpose-built reception barn

Our purpose-built Reception Barn has been designed to complement the house and is a state-of-the-art space for your wedding. It has capacity for 160 guests on round tables or up to 200 on trestles. You’ll be pleased to hear there’s also a spacious bar and lounge area, and large lawn for mingling and playing games in the warmer months!

A special setting

We are set within 200 acres of peaceful wooded countryside, situated under an hour’s drive from Exeter and very close to the picturesque seaside town of Bude. Everywhere you look there are breathtaking, countryside views, and if you walk up to the very top of the site you can even see the sea! If you would like to have a band outside or other entertainment our grounds are very spacious so nearly anything is possible; we’re flexible and open to your creative ideas.

A romantic Church

Close to our site you will find the Parish Church of St Swithian’s which dates back to the late 15th Century. If getting married in a Church is something important to you both, we promise this will not disappoint as it’s been famously described as the ‘least spoilt Church in Cornwall’.

We know that when you’re planning a wedding there are a million things to think of and several more to do! That’s why we strive to make life as simple as possible for all of the couples that say ‘I do’ at Launcells Barton.

A question we’re often asked is about corkage and whether wedding parties are able to bring their own drinks; the answer is that our experience is here to help make your day run smoothly, to ensure there are fewer worries and more time to spend sharing the special day with your loved ones.

For that reason, we don’t offer corkage and here are the reasons we think this is the best way for your happy day…

No hidden costs

If you’re wanting to bring your own drinks to a wedding venue, you’ll need to be clear with them about all of the expenses associated with this. Waste disposal, the rental of fridges, or even having to hire bar staff can quickly add up to a larger bill than the bar tab itself, with some caterers also adding a corkage charge.

At Launcells Barton we don’t believe in hidden costs; we want you to know what you’re getting and feel safe that you’ll not be hit with additional charges as your plans progress.

We will run through what drinks you want during the course of your day and, if for example, you want a particular wine that is not on our extensive wine list, we’ll take care of it for you. And, when it comes to your day, we run a fully-stocked, fully-staffed bar, to make sure everyone’s glass is charged and they have a great time.

No minimum spend

Considered asking an external company to provide a bar at your wedding? They’ll usually want a minimum spend, which if your guests don’t turn out to be quite as thirsty as you’d anticipated, could mean you’re left footing an additional bill once the wedding is over.

Our bar has no minimum spend; your guests are here to drink as much as they want to, so whether it’s champagne, prosecco or a pint of the finest local ale, you’ll not be left with a sore head from a big bill the next day.

No extra work, and no running out!

The idea of a little weekend away in France to stock up on wine for your big day can seem something of a dream plan, but we’ve seen many bride and grooms in a panic as they’ve ended up not having time to make the trip that was going to be the source of all of the alcohol.

When you have your wedding at Launcells Barton this is all taken care of. You won’t have to worry about getting your stock to the venue after multiple trips in friend’s cars and the best man won’t have to make a dash to the shops half way through the celebrations because you have run out of something!

We have the best of the best!

We’re proud of where we live, so when you book our wedding venue it’s only natural that you enjoy some of the finest local produce and suppliers whilst nestled away in our own piece of Cornish countryside.

We only provide the very best Cornish ales, lagers and ciders. Looking for a stronger tipple? All of our spirits are handcrafted and premium, so your guests will be getting the very best. We have three signature cocktails which we know work really well for a wedding. We have designed them so we can make 100 for your welcome drinks and guests won’t be waiting around while we make them all! The ‘Launcells Long Acre’ I designed myself and is so refreshing with elderflower and apple. We also have our own take on a Gin Fizz and our Bellini with a peach kick!

We know every wedding is different, so we’ve crafted our packages over time to be as flexible as possible. Whether it’s Pimm’s and Fizz for a hot summer day or a gentleman’s whiskey bar, we’ll be able to make sure it’s as memorable for your guests as it is for you and your partner.

Whilst you may have been planning every aspect of your wedding day for many months, the moment your invites touch down on the doorstep will be the first time you get to share your plans with friends, family and your nearest and dearest.

How do you make sure they’re all you want them to be? Perhaps you’re wondering what’s currently on trend or simply needing some inspiration and escape from all of the other decisions piling up on your plate?

We’ve put together a few helpful pointers to set you on your way…

Currently on trend:

Handwritten Fonts

If you’re looking for the current trend in wedding design and invites then you’ll need look no further than handwritten fonts and calligraphy; elegant yet modern, these fonts are being used by a lot of designers in the industry and there’s no sign of them going away in 2018.

Popular colours and embellishments

Rose gold foil has been a particularly popular shade, but don’t be afraid to mix your colours for something really bold and striking. For added luxury and texture you could go for hot foil printing, available from many sites online. You many also choose to incorporate metallic colors into your design; if you do your details will literally pop off the page and be sure to provide your guests with a little dazzle.

A softer approach

Prefer a softer approach? Why not have a watercolour design, which uses delicate brush strokes to add colour and texture. If you’re creative and have the time you could give it a go yourself, but be sure to consider the amount of work that’s involved!

It may be more efficient to order some digital prints or work with a local provider.

Not wanting to follow the crowd and fancy something a little different? The great news is that the possibilities are endless, and with Pinterest and Instagram the inspiration should be too! When it comes to Devon and Cornwall we’re blessed with an eclectic mix of suppliers and designers – there really is something for everyone!

When should they be sent out?

Traditionally, invites or save the date cards have been sent out three or four months in advance, giving people plenty of time to request time off work, find accommodation and arrange child care. The most important thing here is to ensure you’re giving people enough time to respond and for you to know exact numbers well before the big day. Planning your wedding in the knowledge of how many people can make it, and who they are, will make decisions such as table plans all the more easier for you.

Making use of ‘wedsites’

As afore mentioned, being organised really does set you on the road to success when it comes to planning your wedding. Many couples are making using of ‘wedsites’ and free online apps in order to consolidate all of their RSVP’s in one place. It takes away the stress of responses getting lost in the post, and hopefully for most, it’s easier than having to pop to the post office.

What girl doesn’t love receiving flowers? But when it comes to picking them for your wedding day how do you know which ones to go for and which florist to go with? They undoubtedly have the potential to add a little special sparkle to your big day, so here’s a few tips our recent brides have used to make sure they get it right…

Be clear on your budget

We know that when it comes to planning a wedding your budget can be pulled in many different directions. Be clear and strict on what you spend in each area; as a rule of thumb, flowers and floral displays will usually account for 10% of your overall budget.

This will of course depend on the style of your wedding; if you’re keeping it minimal you can lower that figure, whilst if you’re wanting them to be a real feature of your ceremony and reception you may need to adjust upwards. The important thing is that you have a realistic budget to achieve the wedding you’re dreaming of.

Have a look around

The sound of homework may send shivers down your spine, but searching for flowers needn’t be a chore for you and your partner. Two places which will be a valuable source of information and inspiration are Instagram (search for those hashtags) and Pinterest.

The most important thing here is to get a feel for what you both like; once you’ve agreed you can then chat with local florists and your venue to get even more information and ideas.

Decide what level of styling you desire

When you picture your wedding do you envisage your ceremony and reception rooms filled with an abundance of florals and fauna? Or would you rather forgo embellishing the venue and just focus on your creative attention on bouquets, button holes and table decorations? From your research you may have gathered images of large installations and grand creations hanging from rafters, but this may have been from admiration rather than reality – it’s easy to get carried away!

Get professional help!

You may be lucky enough to have a loved one with heaps of creative flair and a willingness to help you out, but if you’re not confident enough to take on the task there are plenty of talented florists out there; we have a couple of top choices listed on our recommended suppliers page. Launcells Barton is an incredibly special place for all of the team here and we’re proud and honored to share it with people on one of the most important and memorable days of their lives. We try to make it the perfect day for each and every couple, knowing that we want our service levels to match the unique and special nature of our location.

When we came to add to our team a couple of months ago we knew we needed someone that would go the extra mile for our couples, someone that would make their day even more enjoyable and most importantly stress free!

Let us introduce that someone to you – Alannah, our new Assistant Wedding Coordinator!

So Alannah, what was it that first attracted you to working at Launcells?

I’m lucky to live in the area and I’ve always had a passion for everything the North Cornwall coast has to offer. I’d visited Launcells in the past so I knew how postcard perfect the actual village and church were – when the opportunity came up to work at Launcells Barton it was a chance I couldn’t pass up!

So how did you make the move to becoming Assistant Wedding Coordinator?

When I was younger I worked for a few pubs and hotels; I always enjoyed interacting with people and it was at that point I had my first experiences of being involved with weddings.

The dream job had always been to work within the industry full time as it plays to my skill set – I love the whole process, from meeting with a couple for the first time through to planning their day and then helping them turn it into a reality!

Great! So you’re settling in well?

I’m really enjoying it! I love the drive that everyone here has to make each wedding as unique and special as the next. No two days or weddings are ever the same, and continually trying to exceed people’s expectations is something that’s been incredibly enjoyable and rewarding – we get some fantastic feedback which makes it all worthwhile!

What is your favourite part of your new role?

There’s nothing like the buzz of a wedding day – we know that this will be one of the most special and cherished of that person’s life – it’s not just another wedding for us, we really care and want them to enjoy it as much as possible – it’s that passion that I really enjoy!

And what do you think is the most important part of your job?

Listening! It’s essential that you understand what your couple want and need from their day. Being organised and writing it all down helps too!

There must be a lot to think about! What has been your best moment so far?

At the end of October, I managed my first wedding, single handedly. Although a little nervous as it is quite a lot of pressure as you would expect, everything went perfectly and we were able to give the happy couple a day to remember. They thanked me personally and I had such a sense of achievement, I really do genuinely care about all of our clients.

What are your thoughts on the recent royal wedding announcement?

Ha! It’s funny you ask that, I have just been reading up on the latest! I am a true romantic at heart so I get caught up in these types of things – makes me certain I am in the right line of work!

What a coincidence! How would you describe Launcells?

It is a typically Cornish and stunning venue, set in beautiful countryside. And of course there’s a great team behind it, who are guaranteed to make all of your wedding dreams come true!

Do you have any hobbies?

Well having two young children means I am extremely busy, but I love being a mum and spending time with them very much.

You’ve picked the perfect venue, you’ve started whittling the guest list down and you’re all set to go with the best man and bridesmaids feverishly making plans for your hen and stag dos.

But how about the catering? Whether it’s braised beef, melting meringues or a trio of delicious desserts, selecting the right caterer can not only provide you with great food but also take a lot of stress from your proverbial plate.

Here are our top tips on how to get the right caterer for your wedding…

Deciding your budget

As with every other element of your wedding the catering is going to need a budget. When it comes to food this is usually calculated per head, so the first question you’re going to have to ask yourself is, how many heads are there going to be?

Also consider how many children will be attending your big day – these can often be priced differently and will need to be taken into account when it comes to selecting your options – a child’s palette can be very different to that of an adult!

If you’re inviting children we’re able to help out and ensure that tables are child-friendly, free from glass and ready for the little ones to enjoy!

Make sure there’s a clear understanding of what’s included and what you need

Be sure to get a clear understanding of what’s available at your venue when it comes to catering in order to avoid you having additional costs being added to your initial catering quote. Will they be providing staff, cutlery and plates? Some caterers will include this in their packages, whilst others may quote separately.

At Launcells we have a fitted kitchen for caterers to use in order to support them in delivering you with your dream food or meal. It also means they don’t need to pay out for a catering tent, equipment and gas or electricity – costs that would otherwise need to be passed on to you.

Sit down meal or more informal dining?

When you picture your wedding do you imagine sitting in a room with a carefully executed table plan, surrounded by friends and family enjoying their formal three course meal, or a more informal scene, guests mingling and popping out for a hog roast when they fancy?

Whatever you vision may be, you’ll need to find a caterer that’s in their element when it comes to the style of catering you’re after. Be sure to ask if they’ve catered for similar styles in the past, perhaps ask if they have references for those weddings and be sure to listen to any advice they give you as they’ll have undoubtedly learnt the best way to deliver your perfect plan!

Could you ask someone’s advice?

There’s no better recommendation than from someone you know and trust, or from experiencing it yourself! Have you recently been to a wedding where the food simply blew you away? Perhaps people you know could recommend the caterer they used?

Researching potential supplier websites is very different to seeing them in action and the final product on your plate, so definitely take onboard recommendations from those closest to you, as well as your own experiences.

Making sure your plans are right

Your wedding venue is going to be an incredibly important part of your big day and will also play a huge role in many of the decisions you go on to make; from where the entertainment can be situated and set up, right through to the potential colour schemes you choose and the photographs that will capture each and every moment from the day.

Contacting us and making your initial visit

The search for a wedding venue often starts with a website, but how do you really know how things will work and what they’ll look like in real life? Once we’ve answered any initial questions you may have and sent you all of the information you’ll need to help you make your choice, many of our couples will come and view our venue to get a feel for the place, to understand how it will work for them and to ensure it’s the perfect fit.

Every wedding is different and unique; we know this and we understand this, so as we walk around our venue we’ll try to give you as many ideas for the day as we can, using our experience of what has worked particularly well for some of our previous brides and grooms.

Saying ‘I do’ to Launcells Barton

The perfect place and the perfect date is what every bride hopes for, so if you’ve decided that Launcells Barton hits the mark for both of those, we’ll hold your date for seven days in order to allow you to sign all of the paperwork and make a deposit, after which your date is then secured.

Once all of those formalities are done and dusted it really is full steam ahead with planning!

Re-visiting Launcells Barton

We know there’s a lot to think about on your first visit and you may want to show off the venue to some of your close family in advance, or re-visit us in order to work out the practicalities of some of the elements of your day with us or other suppliers. We can welcome couples back to our venue twice before their big day, which is usually enough to ensure that your day is perfectly planned and your mind is at rest.

Planning your big day

Communication is key when planning such a special occasion, so we’ve honed and tweaked our processes to ensure we help you as much as possible. The first element of this is our wedding coordination form, which we’ll send out as soon as you’ve confirmed your date.

For some couples this has proven to be a real god-send, as it lays out everything you need to be thinking about and organising throughout the day – the timings, who’s doing what, the suppliers you need to get in contact with; it really does give a real focus and a tick list of things that need to be completed.

A handy info guide!

Sometimes when you’re planning a wedding it’s when it gets to bedtime that you start to think about a million and one things you should or need to be doing. To make sure you’re never caught short we’ve created a handy info guide for our brides, so that all of your questions – whether it be the size of the tables or anything else at our venue – are answered with the information you need no matter what time of the day.
