So you’ve decided your budget allows for live music at your wedding? Great news! It’s a fantastic way to create the type of atmosphere you desire and also make your day really memorable. Whether you’re looking for a string quarter or disco band, we at Launcells Barton have compiled a checklist to ensure it goes off without a hitch and ensure you get the perfect match!
1. The most important point is to be sure of your budget from the get go. You don’t want to find someone great and then come to realise that your budget doesn’t really allow. Ask yourselves, is it one of the most important aspects of your wedding or just a small addition? Also remember that quality music isn’t cheap. Hold off on the research until you know how much you are willing to spend!
2. You’ll need to sit down with your fiancé and discuss what type of music you would like. It’s helpful to think about both of your tastes and what type of atmosphere you’d like to create. Do you want it to be chilled and complimented by classical music or would you like something to get the party started and making everyone get up on their feet?
3. Its handy to have a rough run through of your day to see what times you would like live music to be played. Are you wanting to have music at the ceremony, during a reception or meal, or for an evening party? Maybe you’d like all of these, but do keep referring back to your budget!
4. Research is a very important part of the planning process. If there’s a band based at the opposite end of the country don’t be disheartened as they may be prepared to travel, but this will obviously be worked into the price. Obtain full quotes from your top choices with no hidden costs, and ask their availability to be certain they can make your date.
5. If you have managed to whittle it down and made your final choices, you now need to ask questions which are important to you. If there is a certain song you would like played, make sure that your band are happy to do this. You are paying for a service and therefore have the right to make certain requests, but make sure it’s nothing too outlandish! Also ensure that you obtain a full set list and check you are happy beforehand.
6. If at all possible, its beneficial to meet up with your band, rather than meeting them for the first time on the day. This of course might not be possible but if it is, do try to make the effort. It’s a good idea to put them in touch with your venue also, in case they have any technical or logistical questions.
7. Before the big day comes, do make sure you check with the band how long it will take them to set up and what this will involve, such as how much room they will need. It is common practice for set up to take place after the meal, when tables are being cleared and guests are at the bar getting drinks. Bear in mind some musicians could need an hour for this.
