Wedding Venue

Five ways to feel like royalty on your big day

As we enter the final countdown to the Royal wedding we thought it would be a great time to think of a few ways you can ensure that you’re treated like royalty on your own big day.

Harry and Meghan have certainly made their day their own; they’ve broken from tradition to invite 1,000 members of the public, they’re the first royal wedding not to serve a fruitcake and are also tying the knot on a Saturday rather than a week day, so what special touches can you treat yourselves to?

A venue steeped in history or a modern feel?

The choice of venue is of course one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when you’re planning your wedding. Harry and Meghan will be having their nuptials in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle which is steeped in Royal history, so if you’re looking for your own slice of history we’re lucky to have St Swithin’s Church, famously referred to as ‘the least spoilt church in Cornwall’ by Sir John Betjeman, a literal stone’s throw from our venue. You can also enjoy your wedding weekend in our Manor House, which is referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086!

Fancy adopting some of Harry and Meghan’s more modern ideas? Our brand new, purpose-built reception barn has been designed to complement the original house and is able to fit up to 180 guests on round tables or 200 on trestles. This space gives our couples complete flexibility to decorate and make the space their own. It doesn’t stop their either! Our converted 19th century Mill Barn which is built from stone offers even more chances for you to make your day your own and can seat up to 160.

Invited by your majesty

Harry and Meghan’s invitations were made by London-based fine printers ‘Barnard and Westwood’ who’ve been creating invitations for the royal family since 1985. Their invite differs to William and Kate’s as it bares the crest of Prince Charles rather than the Queen, from whom all previous invites have been sent.

Your own invites will be the first chance for you to share the style of your wedding; will you go modern or traditional? The great news is that Devon and Cornwall are both full of fantastic designers – there’s something to meet everyone’s chosen style.

Wedding Barn Cornwall

Fancy florals

Back in March, Kensington Palace announced that Harry and Meghan had chosen Philippa Craddock to create the floral design for their wedding, both for the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel and the reception at Windsor Castle. Choosing flowers and designs won’t be something most of us do on a daily basis, so we’re always happy to give you ideas and suggestions and put you in touch with the best suppliers we know locally.

A classical choice of music

Whilst it’s rumored that Elton John is set to play at the Royal Wedding, one musician not gaining as many headlines is 19-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason who will also be amongst the day’s performers. Classical music can give your ceremony a real air of elegance and with a great selection of classical musicians and string quartets blessing the West Country it could be an option to explore if you’ve not considered it before.

A show stopping cake

Traditionally royal wedding cakes make a real statement, boasting multiple tiers adorned with intricate sugar work. Whilst we’re not advising you copy Prince Charles and Camilla in terms of size (theirs weighed an impressive 17 stone and took around 130 hours to decorate), you’ll definitely want it to be every bit as tasty, so if you’re wanting some recommendations on who to go with we’ve been lucky enough to sample some fantastic cakes from local suppliers and always happy to let you have our recommendations.

More wonderful testimonials from our newlyweds

Exclusive Use Barn Wedding Cornwall

We put an incredible amount of effort and passion into each and every wedding we hold at Launcells Barton, so it’s always humbling to hear some of the feedback we receive from the couples that choose to share one of the most special days of their lives with us. There’s no better way to describe a wedding day at Launcells Barton than from the people that have experienced it themselves, so here are just a few kind words from those that have…

“What a place! Just beautiful. We had THE best winter wedding here. Thank you Lara and Matt for helping to make our day so special. I wish words could describe just how wonderful our day was. Whatever your vision for your wedding, I’m pretty sure you can achieve it here. It’s beautiful, flexible and Lara and Matt will do everything to make your day as carefree and memorable as possible. Thank you! xx”
– Alisa Horton

“We got engaged near Bude and had this romantic idea about having our wedding nearby, forcing our friends and family to trek from afar down to the Cornish coast. After looking at six or seven venues, none quite hitting the mark – all too ‘weddingy’ – we stumbled upon Launcells for our last appointment before giving up and resigning to a venue closer to home. We didn’t make it out the car before we made our minds up; it was perfect. Rustic but not too rustic, wedding appropriate but not just another ‘wedding barn’, secluded without being too remote. Then we met Lara and Matt and the deal was done. So helpful without being pushy, relaxed while meticulously organised. Our wedding day was such fun. We didn’t want anything too traditional or formal. We wanted something personal and unique to us; Launcells Barton was the perfect venue to do just that.”
– Ben and Nicole

“Thank you so much for allowing us into your home for our wedding day. Launcells Barton was such a beautiful setting for the day and our guests were all blown away by it and said how much of a great time they had there. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thanks for helping it run so smoothly.”
– Jess and Matt

Gorgeous words from our happy couples

Bride and groom's outdoor ceremony at Bude wedding venue

We absolutely love receiving wonderful testimonials from our newlyweds as the most important thing to us is making sure we create weddings to remember, and memories to last a lifetime. We always strive to pull out all of the stops in an effort to make you look back at yours and fondly think ‘that was the most incredible day our lives!’

Launcells Barton is our pride and joy and we know that should you choose to be married at our exclusive hire venue, you won’t regret it! You can read more about our unique qualities in this recent blog post. But don’t just take our word for it, have a read of these testimonials from some of our recent couples who have felt compelled to share their stories and kind words…

“Dan and I first visited Launcells Barton on a rainy January afternoon and were immediately taken with Lara and Matt’s enthusiasm and the sheer beauty of the venue. We knew it was the perfect venue for the relaxed feel we wanted but also enough of a blank canvas that we could make it our own. Lara, Matt and Alannah coordinated and supported us through the day perfectly! One thing that was really important to me was that the evening had a good ‘flow’, I really wanted to avoid a venue where guests were segregated into different rooms depending on whether they were at the bar, relaxing or dancing and the main barn was perfect for this. I honestly couldn’t fault the entire weekend and would do it all again in a heartbeat – rain included! Thank you so much to Lara, Matt, Alannah and the rest of the Launcells team for helping us create the wedding of our dreams!”
– Charlotte and Dan

“We fell in love with Launcells Barton at our first viewing. The owners, Matthew and Lara, have put so much love and effort into creating the most perfect of wedding venues. Relaxed, yet efficient, they put you at ease with their willingness to please and friendly can-do attitude. Nothing is too much trouble and they are on hand to help and advice from the day you book, right up to your wedding day. Throughout the actual day, Matthew and Lara made sure that all aspects ran smoothly with no disruption to ourselves or our guests. Lara even got soaked helping me into the car whilst it was raining so that my dress and I stayed dry. It’s been almost a month now since our wedding and we’re still receiving comments from our friends and family complimenting Launcells Barton on their fabulous service and striking setting. We really did have the best weekend, above and beyond all our expectations.”
– Kate and Geoff

“Thank you again for such a magical wedding, the day went perfectly thanks to you, Matt and all involved. Still can’t get over it!! We knew how hard you were working and everything turned out perfectly, more than perfect, completely better than any expectations.”
– Lizzie and Tom

Earthy, Bohemian inspiration for our Cornish Styled Shoot!

Last November we worked with Cathy from Boelle Events on a vision she had, to bring in rich and earthy tones to a bohemian theme! She wanted to go back to her Cornish roots and make the most of what this beautiful part of the country has to offer!

Wedding Venues Devon and Cornwall

CATHY FROM BOELLE EVENTS TELLS US MORE ABOUT THE SHOOT

For this look, I wanted to go back to my Cornish roots and explore an organic, earthy and wintery theme. When I came across Launcells Barton in Bude, I was instantly drawn to it’s raw and rustic features and knew I had to style there! The barns, beams and exposed brickwork were perfect for my rich and bohemian vision. Not forgetting the beautiful house and gardens!

For the styling, I wanted to work with a deep pallet of burgundy’s, navys and golds lifted by a hint of blush and oodles of greenery. I believe in working with the seasons, from colours and accessories to seasonal fresh flowers. The colour pallet came from inspiration of autumnal colours mixed with wintery and seasonal golds to add a hint of festivities. Because each of my styles is unique, I hand dye all my fabrics so I can achieve seasonal colours. For the ‘Cornish Winter’ runner I dyed organic, unbleached cheesecloth with beetroot and red cabbage inspired chemical free dye to create the rich burgundy colour. The perfect base for golds and greens to sit elegantly on a rustic and upcycled oak trestle table. To add a bohemian flair, I incorporated macrame and a wicker peacock chair.

The ultimate wedding planning checklist

Exclusive use wedding venue

Whether you’ve got 10 weeks or 10 years to plan your big day, there’s no getting away from the fact that at times, it can be stressful! Juggling the day job, running a family and keeping up with your social life, all whilst trying to plan a wonderful wedding, can get on top of you. Oh, and not forgetting the engagement party should you choose to have one!

When we welcome couples here to show them around our exclusive hire venue they’re usually just starting their planning process and the biggest piece of advice we like to pass on is to be organised!

Instead of surrounding yourselves with scribblings on post-its, invest in a notebook or journal. Rather than trying to remember appointments, set reminders on your phone. And to ensure you don’t have that moment of blind panic on the day when you’ve forgotten something, follow some sort of plan, checklist or timeline.

Not sure what this should include? Based on 12 months of planning, we’ve created this handy checklist detailing some of the things we think you should complete and when. Take a look and we hope it helps with planning your big day.

First thing’s first

It’s a good idea for the two of you to set some time aside to discuss and agree on a few details before you start researching. You will need to decide on a budget as well as make sure you’re both on the same page as to what sort of day you’re wanting.

Then we would strongly advise before you start any of the steps below that you book your dream venue! Once this is finalised, everything will fall in to place and the process will be so much easier for you. There are so many steps you can’t do until you have your venue, such as send the invites, work out seating plans, discuss ideas with suppliers, and so on. Plus, once your venue is chosen you can really start visualising how your wedding is going to look which is one of the most exciting parts!

Wedding Venue Cornwall

12 months before

  • Research which style of venue you both want and any ideas you have on how you would like to dress it. It’s no good seeing something you’ve fallen in love with on Instagram or Pinterest and then finding out the venue can’t accommodate your style or you don’t have enough time to get in and set it up!
  • Start researching your suppliers such as florists, cake designers, prop hire
  • Book a photographer (and videographer if you would like one)
  • If you think you need some extra support, research and book a wedding planner
  • Choose your wedding party (best man, maid of honour and so on…)
  • Think about your guest list and send out save the date cards
  • Start researching the dress! Did you know you need to order your dress at least 8 months before?
  • Book your registrar at time of booking your venue, this is the most important part of your day, as without it you’re not legally married!

10 months before

  • Decide on the entertainment you would like and book
  • Get some style ideas – Pinterest is very inspirational, but some things aren’t always practical, so have a chat with your suppliers about if that stairway of candles you have seen is really practical with children running around
  • Go dress shopping and find the one! Also buy shoes and accessories
  • Order some invitations
  • Reserve a block of hotel rooms / book self-catering house etc for guests should you need
  • Meet with suppliers to see examples, try out sample menus, cakes etc and decide on your favourites
  • Book hair and makeup artists- the good ones get booked up well in advance!

  • Send out your invitations
  • Finalise the menu
  • Order your wedding favours
  • Buy the rings
  • Send running order to your venue and suppliers if needed, so any tweaks can be made.

  • Touch base with all suppliers in case you have any final questions
  • Confirm final numbers by checking your RSVP’s
  • Confirm menus/ drinks numbers etc with suppliers
  • Have a practice run of your makeup and hair
  • Have your last dress and suit fitting
  • Finalise payments to all suppliers
  • Finalise the seating plan
  • Get your hair cut and coloured
  • Get your engagement ring cleaned

  • Send the final guest count to your caterer
  • Pick up your dress and suit

  • Confirm arrival and set up times with all suppliers
  • Pack your suitcase – don’t forget your honeymoon items!

The benefits of your wedding venue providing Drinks Packages

We know that when you’re planning a wedding there are a million things to think of and several more to do! That’s why we strive to make life as simple as possible for all of the couples that say ‘I do’ at Launcells Barton.

A question we’re often asked is about corkage and whether wedding parties are able to bring their own drinks; the answer is that our experience is here to help make your day run smoothly, to ensure there are fewer worries and more time to spend sharing the special day with your loved ones.

For that reason, we don’t offer corkage and here are the reasons we think this is the best way for your happy day…

No hidden costs

If you’re wanting to bring your own drinks to a wedding venue, you’ll need to be clear with them about all of the expenses associated with this. Waste disposal, the rental of fridges, or even having to hire bar staff can quickly add up to a larger bill than the bar tab itself, with some caterers also adding a corkage charge.

At Launcells Barton we don’t believe in hidden costs; we want you to know what you’re getting and feel safe that you’ll not be hit with additional charges as your plans progress.

We will run through what drinks you want during the course of your day and, if for example, you want a particular wine that is not on our extensive wine list, we’ll take care of it for you. And, when it comes to your day, we run a fully-stocked, fully-staffed bar, to make sure everyone’s glass is charged and they have a great time.

No minimum spend

Considered asking an external company to provide a bar at your wedding? They’ll usually want a minimum spend, which if your guests don’t turn out to be quite as thirsty as you’d anticipated, could mean you’re left footing an additional bill once the wedding is over.

Our bar has no minimum spend; your guests are here to drink as much as they want to, so whether it’s champagne, prosecco or a pint of the finest local ale, you’ll not be left with a sore head from a big bill the next day.

No extra work, and no running out!

The idea of a little weekend away in France to stock up on wine for your big day can seem something of a dream plan, but we’ve seen many bride and grooms in a panic as they’ve ended up not having time to make the trip that was going to be the source of all of the alcohol.

When you have your wedding at Launcells Barton this is all taken care of. You won’t have to worry about getting your stock to the venue after multiple trips in friend’s cars and the best man won’t have to make a dash to the shops half way through the celebrations because you have run out of something!

We have the best of the best!

We’re proud of where we live, so when you book our wedding venue it’s only natural that you enjoy some of the finest local produce and suppliers whilst nestled away in our own piece of Cornish countryside.

We only provide the very best Cornish ales, lagers and ciders. Looking for a stronger tipple? All of our spirits are handcrafted and premium, so your guests will be getting the very best. We have three signature cocktails which we know work really well for a wedding. We have designed them so we can make 100 for your welcome drinks and guests won’t be waiting around while we make them all! The ‘Launcells Long Acre’ I designed myself and is so refreshing with elderflower and apple. We also have our own take on a Gin Fizz and our Bellini with a peach kick!

Attractive packages and customization

We know every wedding is different, so we’ve crafted our packages over time to be as flexible as possible. Whether it’s Pimm’s and Fizz for a hot summer day or a gentleman’s whiskey bar, we’ll be able to make sure it’s as memorable for your guests as it is for you and your partner.

We will take care of everything

Whilst you’re enjoying one of the best days of your life, surrounded by your nearest and dearest, we will be working behind the scenes to make sure everything goes smoothly. You will be blissfully unaware of the many duties being kept on top of during the day. The last thing you want to worry about is who is going to be serving the drinks, if you run the bar yourself, or cutting all those lemons and limes, restocking the fridges and washing hundreds of glasses. And what’s more, none of your guests will have to help either, everyone can relax and enjoy being waited on hand and foot.

And making it all work?

Want to put an amount behind the bar for your guests? No problem! Like the idea of a cash bar? No worries. Want a wedding day without hassle or stress? We’ve got you covered. And thanks to our premises license, you can dance the night away and indulge in those midnight munchies with a glass of fizz in your hand!

If you’d like more information on holding your wedding at Launcells Barton, then please do give us a call on 01288 352352 and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Invitations to make your guests swoon

Whilst you may have been planning every aspect of your wedding day for many months, the moment your invites touch down on the doorstep will be the first time you get to share your plans with friends, family and your nearest and dearest.

How do you make sure they’re all you want them to be? Perhaps you’re wondering what’s currently on trend or simply needing some inspiration and escape from all of the other decisions piling up on your plate?

We’ve put together a few helpful pointers to set you on your way…

Currently on trend:

Handwritten Fonts

If you’re looking for the current trend in wedding design and invites then you’ll need look no further than handwritten fonts and calligraphy; elegant yet modern, these fonts are being used by a lot of designers in the industry and there’s no sign of them going away in 2018.

Popular colours and embellishments

Rose gold foil has been a particularly popular shade, but don’t be afraid to mix your colours for something really bold and striking. For added luxury and texture you could go for hot foil printing, available from many sites online. You many also choose to incorporate metallic colors into your design; if you do your details will literally pop off the page and be sure to provide your guests with a little dazzle.

A softer approach

Prefer a softer approach? Why not have a watercolour design, which uses delicate brush strokes to add colour and texture. If you’re creative and have the time you could give it a go yourself, but be sure to consider the amount of work that’s involved!

It may be more efficient to order some digital prints or work with a local provider.

For those wanting to buck the trend…

Not wanting to follow the crowd and fancy something a little different? The great news is that the possibilities are endless, and with Pinterest and Instagram the inspiration should be too! When it comes to Devon and Cornwall we’re blessed with an eclectic mix of suppliers and designers – there really is something for everyone!

When should they be sent out?

Traditionally, invites or save the date cards have been sent out three or four months in advance, giving people plenty of time to request time off work, find accommodation and arrange child care. The most important thing here is to ensure you’re giving people enough time to respond and for you to know exact numbers well before the big day. Planning your wedding in the knowledge of how many people can make it, and who they are, will make decisions such as table plans all the more easier for you.

Making use of ‘wedsites’

As afore mentioned, being organised really does set you on the road to success when it comes to planning your wedding. Many couples are making using of ‘wedsites’ and free online apps in order to consolidate all of their RSVP’s in one place. It takes away the stress of responses getting lost in the post, and hopefully for most, it’s easier than having to pop to the post office.

We hope this has got you a little closer to choosing the right invites for you! If you’d like more information on holding your wedding at Launcells Barton, then please do give us a call on 01288 352352 and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

5 tips to help you when choosing your wedding flowers

Wedding Venue Cornwall

What girl doesn’t love receiving flowers? But when it comes to picking them for your wedding day how do you know which ones to go for and which florist to go with? They undoubtedly have the potential to add a little special sparkle to your big day, so here’s a few tips our recent brides have used to make sure they get it right…

Be clear on your budget

We know that when it comes to planning a wedding your budget can be pulled in many different directions. Be clear and strict on what you spend in each area; as a rule of thumb, flowers and floral displays will usually account for 10% of your overall budget.

This will of course depend on the style of your wedding; if you’re keeping it minimal you can lower that figure, whilst if you’re wanting them to be a real feature of your ceremony and reception you may need to adjust upwards. The important thing is that you have a realistic budget to achieve the wedding you’re dreaming of.

Bride and Groom kiss and sign register at a wedding venue in Cornwall

Have a look around

The sound of homework may send shivers down your spine, but searching for flowers needn’t be a chore for you and your partner. Two places which will be a valuable source of information and inspiration are Instagram (search for those hashtags) and Pinterest.

The most important thing here is to get a feel for what you both like; once you’ve agreed you can then chat with local florists and your venue to get even more information and ideas.

Decide what level of styling you desire

When you picture your wedding do you envisage your ceremony and reception rooms filled with an abundance of florals and fauna? Or would you rather forgo embellishing the venue and just focus on your creative attention on bouquets, button holes and table decorations? From your research you may have gathered images of large installations and grand creations hanging from rafters, but this may have been from admiration rather than reality – it’s easy to get carried away!

Get professional help!

You may be lucky enough to have a loved one with heaps of creative flair and a willingness to help you out, but if you’re not confident enough to take on the task there are plenty of talented florists out there; we have a couple of top choices listed on our recommended suppliers page. Although it may look easy and effortless, there is a lot of skill involved in the craft and sometimes it is best left to the professionals.

The benefits of being exclusive

There are many benefits to hiring an exclusive use venue for your wedding day and this extends to your flowers. At Launcells Barton couples are able to decorate the venue as they wish, and we’re always happy to answer any questions you have and guide you as to what’s worked particularly well for some of our previous brides.

We’re here to make sure you have the perfect day – from blooms to bunting.

Mulled wine and sparkle for this laid back Winter Wedding in Cornwall!

Back in December, on a bright Winter’s day Ailsa and Phil, along with the help of their two little girls tied the knot in front of all their friends and family!

Winter Wedding In Cornwall

If ever people think they can’t organise a wedding in under a year, Ailsa and Phil are perfect proof that it can be done and planned to perfection with no detail missed! Having given themselves only 4 months due to Phil’s leave from the Marines!

I have to admit I do love a Winter wedding, just as much as I love a Summer wedding! Yes you don’t always know what the weather is going to do, but as long as you have inside and outside options, it doesn’t really matter. Winter and Summer are just very different weddings, but both have their charms! A Winter wedding the sun sets earlier, so you get all the atmosphere of the candles flickering away, guests all cosy inside with hot mulled wine and, if you can’t add a bit of sparkle at Christmas, then when can you?!  Ailsa and Phil’s wedding was all those things and more!

Wedding Venues In Cornwall

Ailsa got ready in the house with her friends and two little girls by her side, while Phil got into his uniform with all his friends at the couple’s house. Ailsa had the most stunning beaded grey dress from Needle and Thread and her bridesmaids wore mix matched 3/4 length grey, white and pink dresses which fitted the laid back feel of the wedding perfectly.  The bridal party’s make up was perfected by one of our faves and recommended supplier Lizzy Couch.

The groomsmen soon arrived and welcomed guests in the Snug Bar, before everyone began to take their seats.

The couple’s speeches were really relaxed and very personal, with the Groom even singing a song he’d written for his new Wife!

Guests were then asked to make their way to the reception barn, while Ailsa & Phil had a bit of time with their family.

I had a very special little helper get all the guests up on their feet by clinking the glass, ready to announce the newlyweds for the first time to all their friends and family!

Their guests enjoyed slow roast beef with all the trimmings provided by The Woodfired Kitchen, before they got the pizza oven all fired up serving mini calzone pizzas throughout the whole evening. They were such a fantastic take on the traditional Cornish pastie!

Rebecca Roundhill one of our recommended suppliers and all round fabulous photographer captured all these beautiful images for Ailsa & Phil’s day. It’s so great having Rebecca with us during a wedding, she is a burst of sunshine and is just so relaxed- which is what years of experience brings!

A few words from Ailsa- I’m struggling with where to start, because it’s so difficult to put into words just how wonderful our day was. From the moment we met Lara and looked around the venue, there was no question that we were going to get married there. It really is a hidden gem. We live 3 minutes away and never even knew it existed. It had everything we wanted from a venue; a beautiful space for our ceremony in the Mill Barn, a large reception Barn for our guests to eat and be merry, a picturesque setting for capturing stunning photos, and a gorgeous farmhouse with the most amazing bridal suite you will ever see! That bathroom!

You’d think that only giving ourselves 4 months to plan our wedding would be stressful. But, I can honestly say that I enjoyed every second of the organisation. Communication between ourselves and Lara was excellent and any questions we had were promptly answered.
The day itself was just perfect. Being a December wedding we almost expected bad weather. Every part of our day was inside or undercover so, rain or shine, it really didn’t matter. However, we woke up to blue skies and pink clouds over the farmhouse. It looked beautiful!

One of the best things about the venue is that it is so flexible. Whatever your vision for your wedding, I’m pretty sure it can be achieved here. We had a very relaxed, informal ceremony and we chose to do the speeches immediately after with canapes and welcome drinks in the Mill Barn, rather than during the wedding breakfast. We also had bag pipes during the ceremony, a speech delivered using a guitar and a Scottish Ceilidh in the evening. Anything is possible here!

Throughout the day Matt, Lara and their team behind the scenes made sure that everything ran smoothly. If there were any hiccups we really had no idea because we were just enjoying ourselves so much! Thank you Matt, Lara and team for all the hard work that went into making such special memories for Phil and I. We couldn’t have asked for more. I highly recommend Launcells Barton as a wedding venue: It’s beautiful, flexible, and Lara and Matt are dedicated to making your day as carefree and memorable as possible!

Ailsa and Phil’s wedding was totally relaxed and reflected them as a couple perfectly, incorporating their young family, Ailsa’s scottish roots and Phil’s duty to the Marine’s, making every special moment personal to them. We wish Ailsa and Phil a fantastic future together and sure we will see you out and about as your young family grows!
